Sharks and Soup

Sharks are being killed for the consumption of shark fin soup. It needs to be banned. Eradicated. Read more about this specific issue in a great on-line article posted here. And more about shark conservation from a great organization and wonderful web site here.

I was not aware that shark fin soup existed. It is such a waste to fin the sharks and then dispose of the bodies. It seems like even more of a waste since shark fins have no nutritional value, may be harmful and the fins have no taste. Shark fin soup should be eradicated even if it is part of some cultures since it is putting shark populations at risk.

That article was definitely a lessoned learned. I had no idea the depth of how endangered sharks are. 50% are bycatch, shark graveyards, fin soup, I would have never expected/heard of any of this. The East Asian market really needs to change some things around. Something in the article that I really liked was the question that related to how only seven could people to cause so much uproar in Asia. The person replied that they have a strong front with lots of followers. It just seems to give hope that one person or a small group of people can make huge changes; it just takes a lot of work and determination.

I too have never heard of shark fin soup. Its really quite terrible. And they say that it doesnt really even have a taste; just a interesting texture?? I looked it up on youtube and found some interesting videos; this is the one that I thought got the point across the most and was the most interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2UKgLsOhRM&mode=related&search=

i think its kinda silly that "finning" is practiced... such a pretty big waste... considering the purpose... the fins added to this so-called "fin shop"... has no additional value in nutrition or taste... seems kind of useless... like everyone else.. i have not heard of this kind of soup... but i really hope that this practice of finning is stopped... wouldn't it make more sense to use the fins and the meat from the body?... anyways... i think it should be stopped

I was talking to a friend, who is Japanese Canadian, and she talked about how important shark fin soup is at weddings - it's a sign of wealth or something related to that... I told her about Sharkwater and how he talks about young couples taking a stance and saying no to shark fin soup at their weddings - she was impressed and said that would definitely make a large positive impact.
