I think it seems like a reasonable quota. It seems like the ice flows are coming back to the areas and as has been stated the population of seals has increased dramatically since the 1970's. A 17 percent cut is good as there has been a decline in the amount of seals since last year, but it is also not such a drastic cut that it would allow seal hunt protestors to feel as if they are winning their fight against the seal hunt. We do not need to give these individuals and organizations the right to see our governement weakening in its stance on the seal hunt.

i also agree that this quota is reasonable... as long as the sealers are able to make a living.. thats the most important thing...

I agree, a 17 percent cut to the quota will be a suitable solution to the lack of ice this year, and the sealers will still be able to make some money. If numbers continue to drop when the next major harp seal population survey result come back in 2009, then DFO will have some decisions to make, whether to stop sealing or cut the quota even more. Until then, I do not think any significant changes will take place.

if the herd is healthy, then why cut the quota??? if the seal fishery could be sustained at the prevoius quota, then why lower it?? I think its just Canada giving in to international pressure.
